I think I'm going to end up being a little harsher than most here.
1) This is a police dog. To my knowledge, they are allowed into a police station. There is no excuse at all for it to have been left in a car with windows closed.
2) He went in there to do some work but thought "... he wouldn't be gone long." Tell me... how different is this than, say, you or I going into a Wal-Mart and doing the same? ANY AMOUNT OF TIME IS TOO LONG!
3) This is a police officer. I fully expect police officers to be held to a higher standard than Regular Joe out there - they are the ones that are supposed to lead by example. What example is this guy setting? That it's ok to do so as long as you think you're not going to be inside long? It was a grave mistake that cost the life of a police officer. Intentional or not, what penalty would a citizen face for a mistake that would have cost this dog it's life? I expect this officer to face the same AS A MINIMUM. If an officer makes a stupid mistake that costs his HUMAN partner their life, what penalty would they face? I expect this officer to face the same AS A MINIMUM.
I would certainly hope that they don't try to downgrade punishment because, after all, this is a canine officer. If a police officer would be fired for a mistake that cost the life of a human partner, then the same is called for here. If a police officer would be demoted for a mistake that cost the life of a human partner, then the same is called for here. This is IN ADDITION to any fines/charges a citizen would face if this incident happened outside, say, a Wal-Mart.
