premium dog food

When I tried to switch to premium dog food such as Blue Buffalo, Taste of Wild and 4 health my Collies had loose stool. (not good with a long hair dog)

I tried to mix with there old dog food to change them over but the loose stool would not go away.

The Collies can process all kinds of human food without having any problems except for lobster and hot dogs.

I feed Pedigree dry with a can of Pedigree over the top. They get whatever I'm having for supper, small portion without any problems.

Any one else have problems with premium dog food?
  • When Zig was on TOTW she had intermittent problems with loose stools. Muscle testing told me the pea protein, I seem to recall, was the issue. They are now off kibble and on a carb/veggie mix that I make, chicken, and supplements. Oh, the relief! No more issues. BUT! When I tried that on a foster dog, it nearly kilt her. She does not agree with chicken. So...she is on a beef based kibble and doing fabulously.

You can feed the "best" food in the world and if there is an ingredient in it that disagrees, it will be a problem. Some of the pricier foods have more ingredients added for antioxidants and such, and that may make them more likely to contain something that is a trigger. One of the limited ingredients foods might be helpful. Or you can keep doing what you're doing.

When you've tried switching, have you reduced the amount you feed? More expensive foods are usually more calorie dense. If you don't reduce the amount the dog will be getting way too many calories, which can cause some dogs to have loose stools.

I looked up some calorie counts for comparison just to give you an idea:

Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition -- 335 calories per cup
Blue Buffalo Life Protection Chicken & Rice -- 442 calories per cup
Yes, I cut out the canned food.
  • We switched Jesse to Blue Basics because of his allergies. His stools are softer but not loose.

  • I have Shepard and Newfoundland and use Beneful weight control and dont have any issues
and Newfie has alot of hair
  • Our dogs each weigh about 32 & 35 pounds each eat Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula
Lamb & Brown Rice Recipe or the chicken one. I feed this to our dogs because of the low crude protein. They have no problem with there stools.
