We started giving our seven year old dog one tablet in the morning and one in the evening about a month ago and she has shown noticeable improvement with her hip immobility. I do not have the brand we use available to me at the moment but it said to start her on 2 tablets a day for 4 to 6 weeks and then cut it to one tablet a day for a maintenance dose. As was stated, there is not an overdose concern so I would start with two and adjust according to results. I actually started using Glucosamine/Chondroitin a few years ago for pain in the knees and within three months was good as new. Still take two tablets a day as the doc told me I have early signs of arthritis in my spine.
Addendum: The brand we have been giving our dog is Cosequin DS. It apparently has flavor additives to make it more palapable to the dog. My dog thinks it's a treat.
