The above posts reflect the problems with this issue.
There is little doubt that our laws consider animals property, but there is some conflict in our laws because people have gone to jail (Michael Vick) for abusing animals. What is considered abuse is not well defined and is a HUGE variable.
But if animals were JUST property, people would have the right to do whatever they wanted with that property as long as it didn't interfere with another person's rights.
It seems that business ethics is an oxymoron. To some making a profit justifies almost any business practice as long as there is a profit. Why did we get upset that dog food manufacturers used ingredients from China, after all they were able to maximize their profit. So what that several thousand dogs got sick and others died, they are just dogs (property). (READ SARCASM)
I repeat:
I'm not saying than animals should never be "used" for work, food, breeding, research or any other adjunct to help humans, but that use should justifiable and be as humane as possible and should consider the animal.
