Switch to dry dog food?

My 3 year old female English bulldog is a fussy eater, she's been feed canned food since a puppy. I want to switch her to dry, couple of questions, can anyone recommend a good brand and how do I do the switch over? Also do I just fill the bowl and leave it out and refill when empty or just put it out full daily and keep it full? I tried mixing the dry with her canned, but most of the time she won't eat it.
  • There are just about as many dog food brands as there are dogs! I've tried various kibbles from high end to Purina. High end foods seemed to cause a LOT of noxious gas emissions that caused our eyes to water. I've been feeding our 2 boxers Purina One for years and they're doing great. Gypsy is 11 this month can Cody was 7 last Dec. They're fed just under a cup 2x/day. I would not let her free feed. Bulldogs tend to be pretty round to start with and she might get way too heavy if allowed to eat all she wants when she wants.

You'll have to experiment to see what works for your girl. You may want to stick with the protein that is in the canned food if she's doing well with it. Switch her slowly by mixing a small amount of kibble with her canned, then gradually increase it over several days. She may not like it but she will not starve and will eat what you feed her as long as you don't cave! I know those big sad eyes can make us do things we don't want to. ;)
  • You should go by her current weight ( and taking into consideration if she is overweight, active etc) to find out how much nutrition that a dog needs.
I have raised Josie on Origenz dry biscuit since she was young. It's a pretty high protein, Canadian made, grain free product. I give her 1/2 cup twice a day , on a regular schedule. She is fairly active, weighs 36 pounds each month, her poop is regular and not gross looking( considering it's poop).
Josie is 10 years old this July, and still acts like a pup! She has fantastic skin and her coat is shiny! Loves going camping in the RV, and can not wait until next month. It's been a long winter.
Start your dog slowly, however, buy a small bag of your choice, and mix it in a bit more each time with the canned product, until you are all dry. Watch her well and see if she tolerates it.
  • Our rescue eats more like a cat, so yes, I fill his bowl in the morning. He nibbles all day. Currently he is on Healthy Choice chicken, sweet potato, and pumpkin. Seems to work for him. Remember cheap foods contain a lot of fillers that cause lots of stool. Premium brands reduce stool. If we have it in the house i will pour tuna oil in his bowl. Two benefits, shiny coat and he eats good.
