I just told my BIl who is a retired vet about the left/right signs from tail wagging. He had not heard of that, but suggests that is certainly plausible, they need to signal each other some how.
He would exhale deeply when encountering an unknown dog and watch for a reaction. The exhale is the opposite of aggression, and puts the dog at ease. . . and then he stabs it.
