It is absurd to blame cats for not doing things that they are ill equipped to do. While cats have a much better sense of smell than humans, they don't have anywhere near what a dog does, and they don't hunt primarily by scent, as dogs do. Their size keeps them from running down bad guys or doing SAR work-- just as it keeps smaller dogs from doing these things, but there are countless stories of cats protecting their people, waking them up to danger, alerting them that something is wrong, and even attacking intruders.
My cat will play fetch with her milk carton ring. When her people come home she runs to greet us, she loves us and we love her. She is far more useful than the medium sized rescue dog that we have that is, frankly, a leech who does little other than being a companion for the large dog.
