As xteacher said, dogs are pack animals, and allowing them to bare their teeth or growl at you is telling them that they are the Alpha in the pack, not you. I agree. I have owned dogs that outweigh me-If they didn't respect me as the Alpha member of the pack-all heck would break lose. My dogs know better than to snarl or bare their teeth to me. If I'm doing something to them that makes them uncomfortable, (nail cutting, grooming, removing something from them, etc.), they know they have to accept it without complaining.
It has nothing to do with 'robot-training'. I have never physically reprimanded my dogs. You have to temper the breed's natural instincts with your social situation. IOW: If you don't want a dog that barks, gets protective, herds, hunts, etc. Choose a breed/type that suits your lifestyle.
