Respect, obedience, service are not synonyms to submission, subservience, slavery.
Our dog respects us and is for the most part obedient. However, she does have a personality, a temperament, and her own preferences. She is playful as well as imaginative and curious. We don't look to control her. We look to teach her manners, social skills, and safe parameters. Her communication skills are appropriate to a dog. She wags her tail and runs in circles when she's happy. She whimpers when she's scared or lonely. She barks when she's feeling protective or territorial and sometimes just to get our attention. And yes, she growls when she is feeling threatened or angry. if she is in her bed and anyone approaches she will growl, but she won't bite of we proceed anyway. Dogs are beings, not human but still beings with all of the emotions that go along with that.
