I get what the OP is saying. Often, you'll see a well-trained dog on a walk and it never looks at anything but its owner. That seems sad for the dog.
However, there is a huge difference between "training the life out of a dog" and teaching a dog proper behavior.
If the dog bared its teeth at you because you were "giving her hell", then you need to re-evaluate your training method. Some dogs don't react well to overpowering (which is likely how she saw your behavior) - you need to find ways to correct her behavior without overpowering her.
And that's a lot of what training is about - finding the right tools to use on a particular dog.
The prior post mentioning making the dogs sit until the food bowl is down is a great one. It is something that is very helpful whenever you're feeding more than one dog, but especially when feeding a food protective dog - it teaches them that YOU control the food and makes it easier to teach them to eat out of their bowl only.
