Depends on the dog. I've worked with dogs whose nails needed trimming any where from a minimum of twice a week to once every month or two. Just like people, dogs' nails will grow at different rates.
Walking on concrete or asphalt will help keep some dogs' nails short. Others it doesn't seem to affect at all. I'm guessing it's due to different foot motions.
My vet says regular trimming doesn't make the quicks in a dog's nails recede as much as many people believe it will.
