Trimming toe nails

I took Lady, our adopted Rottie to the Vet for a toenail trim. Because of her previous owner they were exceptionally long and the attendant said she trimmed as much as possible. I forgot to ask how long before I can bring her back for further shortening. Her nails are still long enough I think to cause her some discomfort. How long do you folks think before I can make an appointment to have her nails clipped again? I can't do it myself..
  • As Samantha said when nails have been allowed to grow too long, you need to trim every week or two. This allows the quicks to gradually get back to their normal length without going through the pain of cutting way back to normal length all at once.

I have had patients where we sedated to trim the nails back to normal length, these were guys where the nail trim was a challenge for us and the dog, much preferable to do it all at once (for everyone concerned).

  • Most dogs grow enough within a weekd to allow for a little more trimming.

    We trim ours every week.

  • Can you see the inside, where the nerve is? My dogs nail are white, so I can see easily the pink center and when they need to be cut. That being said, I have found once a month is necessary. The longer they go, the longer the vein inside gets. (We use a dremel, but she is used to it.)
  • Get one of the doggie toe nail grinders.
Most dogs will let you work on there ties with this.
Less chance of cutting into the click.
  • Depends if you walk the Rot on a hard surfaces. It helps to keep them from trimming a lot.
My 4 dogs don't get out on hard surface walks. So I trim my dogs nails every month
