S0rry about your medical news. We are of the age group to have to think about these things. That nice lady vet you mentioned? Depending on your diagnosis, you might talk to her about someone who does rescue work. Maybe it won't be needed right away, but it would be good to have a plan B.
Little kids run around fast, flap their arms and shriek while they play, all of which can unnerve a cat that was not raised with children. Rowdy might not be the one for that particular child.
