Sorry for your loss. We lost our 10 year old golden in November. She had the same problems as your dog. She actually stopped breathing at the vets, then started breathing again on her own. It was just a matter of time so I had them put her down. In October they went in and drained the fluid around her heart and gained an extra month of life. Sure miss her. Losing a pet hurts!
