I wish people would stop inflicting their pets on me in public places. Specially stores. I am not pet friendly. I understand you love your pets BUT they are livestock so leave them home.
You should look at zoning laws and the legal definition of livestock; you'll find companion animals are NOT livestock. Since we have both (companion animals and livestock) I know the difference first hand (just dropped off a load of livestock at the livestock auction). I do agree that many treat and expect others to accept their companion animals as equal to children.
