What's with these crazy min pins?

Some of you know we inherited Darcy a couple of years ago when one of our kids moved to an apartment. That made three dogs for us, at the time, but now Darcy is our one and only. We love her but somebody needs to 'splain these wacky min pins to me. She is a perpetual motion machine. We can't let her outside off-leash because she will catch and eat a dozen lizards. She would also terrorize our postal carrier who obviously made a poor choice of occupations, he's so dog phobic. She now walks nicely on a leash but that took some time and patience to accomplish. I think maybe she has the doggy version of OCD?

Darcy will spend hours a day moving dog beds and little blankets from room to room. They must be properly slobbered up, too. :E She'll take the little dog pad/bed things and stack them all up like The Cat In The Hat. I can't leave her good dog bed out during the day because she will drag it all over the house and mess it up. She will sit and stay when it is feeding time, or for teeth brushing, but not so much otherwise. She is not in the least bit "biddable" (new word from Mark.):B She does that funny thing with a blanket, spinning it over her head and wrapping herself up like a burrito that Rock describes. Her saving grace is that she is a very affectionate little beastie. She just needs a JOB and I have no idea what that might be. She will play fetch and tug-o-war, but only when it's her idea. (see biddability note above.) If anybody has any ideas on how to keep Darcy busy without damage to wildlife or the house, I would love to hear it. BTW, she's about 7 now with no signs of slowing down. Also, she is not the tiny version you often see, she's about 10 lbs.

  • Ah, terrors, er terriers! Your min pin sounds completely normal for the breed. My part westie mix (also in the terrier family) has the total westie personality, and she brought down a bird in our yard the first week we had her. I had to rescue the bird from Maddie, and she was none to please to lose her prize. She's constantly on the hunt for birds, squirrels, and lizards. When she sees one through the window, she goes nuts, whining pitifully, like she's dying - lol!

Terriers were bred originally to hunt vermin of various sorts, so they feel the need to help you out in that area. Sometimes Maddie will start sniffing the ground, then start trying to dig something out - I guess she smells something underground.

Maybe you could play the "Find It" game around the house. Hide tiny high value treats (about 1/4 the size of your baby fingernail) around the house (don't let her see you do it, obviously) and tell her to find them. Start easy, so she gets the idea, then gradually make the hiding places harder to find.

I agree with Susan to teach her tricks - mental exercise will wear her out much faster than physical exercise, since she's already an Energizer Bunny.
  • You could pick up Karen Pryor's book on clicker training and start teaching her tricks. Wear out her mind a little...
  • Welcome to the world of Min Pins...The King of Toys...lol They are very alert, and stubborn. Takes a lot of patience and training with them. We have 2 Min Pins, Rocky is 9 and Mini will turn 10 in Oct. Rocky we got as a pup, at 5 months he killed his first squirrel. Killed his last squirrel(which was number 5) last year (before he went blind brought on by diabetes). Mini is a rescue, we got her when she was 7, she was laid back when we got her. Best advice I can give you is lots of exercise to drain some of the energy (using a treadmill is helpful). The blanket twirl is normal ours do the same thing, they love to be under the blankets.
  • What a great dog! Those behaviors come from the fact that they make good "vermin hunters" on farms. They need action and interest all the time for their smart brains. I know this from family who have minpins. She sounds like a great dog who's pretty smart. I agree, enjoy her quirks and personality. Once you get used to them, life will seem empty without them.
  • It's sometimes very unfortunate, (in this case) when dogs try to do, what they are genetically bred to do. Combine that with poor breeding, and you can have a real problem. You can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends, and your dogs.
  • She sounds exactly like my friends Min Pin. I go bonkers when he comes over with his Min pin LOL. Enjoy!!! They are all alike, LOL.
