I send a dog to gather sheep 500yrds away on an unfamiliar field. The dog can see the sheep when at my feet but looses sight of me the sheep for the last half of the run out to the sheep. Somehow the dog goes around the spot where the sheep are (which it cannot see) and comes in behind the sheep at the right spot to bring them straight towards me.
How does that dog know where it is in relationship to me and the sheep after running 500yrds into an unfamiliar field and not being able to see either for the last 250yrds? It doesn't have a smart phone with a gps app.
