2. Wide toothed comb. Used to flip a Cholla off the dog, as it's very difficult, if not impossible to grab those dang things.

Excellent advise. It shows Pops is an experienced desert dog dude.
The comb will flick off the whole cactus pods and the pliers will pull the singles out of their paws & mouth. The dog will try to pull them out himself but just transfer the stickers. One problem, the dog learns it hurts more coming out than going in and may not want you to help.
