I was amazed as a kid when our Husky would pant by the door to go out to it's run at ten or eleven pm when it was below zero-out she'd go and into her dog house-I'd trudge out to close the gate-she was welcome to stay in but opted to be outside!
I'm pretty impressed with some of the newer dog houses that have double walls and the flap over the door-sized right a dog can stay very warm in one of them with nothing but body heat-that said I think it's important to up the calorie intake of any animals that are outside in the stuff.
My dumb mutt would rather run around outside when it's frigid than stay in-although she does get to a point that she heads for the door and is ready to be inside!
