If the video is old tv it will be 4:3 and not fill the screen
If the video is made for tv it will be 16:9
If the video was originally a theatrical movie release
It can be anywhere between 1,85:1 to 2.35:1
VLC and most other players have a list of aspect ratios
Starting at default aka whatever the info encoded in the video header says it is supposed to be
And going thru the complete list of 5 our 6 selections that you can force it too
When the window opens and your video starts playing
Click on video at the top of the window
Scroll down to aspect
Click
Look at the setting it shows it is using
Choose the next smaller one
4:3 USA
5:4 old analog Europe
16:9
16:10
Etc..
Also make sure stretch video to fit window is turned off
And fit window to video is turned on
If you want max size with proper aspect
Use the full screen menu option or button
Most theatrical release movies will not fill screen top to bottom
Only fill left to right to the correct aspect ratio
The other thing that has not been mentioned
If the video looks correct on the laptop display
But looks wrong on the view sonic monitor
The second display monitor settings in Windows are set to the wrong monitor
