A video player requires a codec for each video format (.wmv, .mov, .mp4, .avi, etc...) you want to play.
Players like VLC and Daum include codecs for pretty much any format imaginable while Windows Media Player only comes with a few making it more limited right out of the box. However, codecs are available to be installed into WMP so it can support more video formats.
