It's all about backup, redundancy, being ready for anything anytime, and not having to depend upon (access to) a fragile and complex ground based infra-structure called "the cellular system". If it wasn't for our RV's extended range cell tower connection equipment, we couldn't get cell tower access in many of the places where we explore and camp in our RV .... even then we of course can't always connect up.
I'll take my satellite based Garmin navigator, it's built-in map database ... along with paper map atlases anytime - over assuming that a ground based umbilical-cord Internet is always going to be available.
Now ... satellite-access to the Internet system is a whole different deal -> and I'll bet that most 20-somethings haven't ever heard of that kind of Internet.
