You're going to want a chromebook. A lot of schools are using them (both of my kids schools hand them out). The kids have school-issued Google accounts. The laptops don't have a lot of storage - it's all in the cloud and connected to their Google accounts so solid WiFi connection is key.
Chromebooks are becoming "dumb terminals" (if you're old enough to remember that term). The data and software are stored elsewhere. They're just a window into the network.
Good news is that they're relatively inexpensive. I'd think you could find a decent one in your price range (though possibly used or refurbished).
