"The Cloud" can be very secure and very reliable if implemented properly. My kids have been using school-issued Chromebooks for years without any trouble. It's an ideal environment for sharing documents and submitting them to the teachers. It also expands the concept of a "school day." My high-school aged son often has assignments due at midnight. Great for procrastinators.
For work, I have literally nothing stored locally. I log into my "virtual desktop" using any device I want and all my stuff is there. I have a company-issued, low-power laptop (minimal storage and memory) but never use it.
Work and school is one thing, but personally I don't put anything in "the cloud." The reason is that unlike my work environment or the kids' school-issued Google accounts, I have no idea what Apple or Google are going to do with my personal stuff. I keep everything stored locally.
