ACER netbook to desk top monitor

I have a ACER netbook windows 7 with a 11" screen and I hooked it up to my 20" monitor with a HDMI cable and it works good, but my netbooks screen stays on too, is this normal? Thanks in advance. Jay

You should be able to turn your screen off using "Fn" + "F6".
