A different browser is not an option. My wife has Parkinson's disease, and changing to a new system would just confuse her. Her days are difficult enough without adding something new to the mix.
You could load a better browser to use for the Flash update, then remove it when you're done. Your wife would never know that the other browser had been on your machine for a short period of time. Note that the flash update may tell you to quit the new/different browser too, but all you should have to do is quit the browser, and let the update finish.
