Our eBay account was hacked recently as well. It was blamed on the fact that I hadn't set up the (not-so-)new security questions. It's an old account we haven't used in ages. Nothing had happened and the eBay CSR said they were likely looking for PayPal information (which I didn't have).
Also, someone told me that this was happening more often to people with gMail accounts. Dunno if that's in any way true. If there's a chance your gMail has been hacked/guessed, change the password before having eBay send you a reset and/or password confirmation.
It probably goes without saying: Don't use the same password for mail that you use for eBay or paypal or credit cards or on-line banking.
Not using a gmail account, just a "regular" one through our local ISP (phone company). Everything that I use that needs a password has a different one. Some of them now need to have a lot more characters (some in caps) and numbers and as I am getting older are harder to remember. Am just starting to write them all down at home but need a safe place to hide it and where I won't forget where it is.
