ALK releases CoPilot app specific for RV's

ALK released their CoPilot app for RVers. It is $49.99. I bought it the day it was released and have been using it in my car to get used to it before does RV season. I've used the copilot brand of smartphone app many years ago and was not a fan of the accuracy of their routes selections or ETA calculations. Now they have added Inrix historical traffic data which is incremented by time of day and in my opinion that app is drastically improved with this INRIX data.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 tablet to run the copilot RV app on. I am extremely happy with this tablet. It is very thin and light with a very high resolution and bright screen. So far I've done about 1200 miles with this tablet and the app and for about $350 total I am very pleased. ProClipUSA makes a device holder specifically for this tablet.

I'd be glad to answer questions people have about the app. There is also a car version of the CoPilot app and they offer a limited use trial for free of the car app. While it will not have the RV features, it is a good way to evaluate the app before you purchase the RV version.

  • One caveat about CoPilot I should mention, though not related specifically to the newly introd RV version. That being reliability?

At the recent FMCA convention in Perry, GA, I brought along only CoPilot on my Samsung Note smartphone, and not a dedicated GPS in my rental car. I had used CoPilot paid version 5 months earlier in Florida with no issues.

However, when I went to use CoPilot in GA, it prompted me to create an account which also enabled free traffic reports. When I did so, CoPilot then asked to me download maps, which I did months earlier and had worked fine previously? Nonetheless, it lost over 1G of maps stored on my device, or couldn't associate the file I already downloaded?

Luck would have it, I only had 2G/3G mobile signal on my Sprint phone, and no signal for my 4G T-mobile hotspot. So was not an option to download maps at my location.

Fortunately, or maybe not, my Cadillac SRX rental had GPS, though had a mind of its own? Taking me in the opposite direction.

Finally realized that the previous rental had input a military base location north of Atlanta. Whereas, the GPS requires to clear out existing routes before it would take you to your destination? What a pain in the donkey?

Bottom-line, you may want to consider if you can trust Co-Pilot as a primary GPS? Or, whether, it should be relegated as strictly a backup device?

Sorry. Found copilot not easy to use and cumbersome. Will stick with my Garmin. FWIW- I did give copilot a try, running it side-by-side with my Garmin GPS. I preferred the Garmin hands down.

I'm not familiar with Co-Pilot. What does it offer over the free Google Maps routing that I use or my onboard GPS?

CoPilot is full-featured just like an onboard GPS but in app forum. Most features you'd find in a Garmin or TomTom PND you will find in CoPilot.
  • racer4, yes you enter the dimensions precisely. The height is entered with feet and inches whatever you'd like. Width is inches - again, whatever you like. Length is entered with a feet and inches and weight is 12,500. The only thing that there isn't an entry for is the amount of propane you are carrying. There is a "avoid propane restricted tunnels" setting though.

You can store all maps locally on your device. I have the entire USA/Canada on mine.

  • Does it allow for the entry of a specific RV height? For example 13'4", 13'5" or 13'6"?

I have the impression that CoPilot, the non RV version has only two vehicle height choices, 12' or 13'.

A vehicle height setting of 13'0" is not much help if my FW trailer is 13'5" and there is a 13'2" bridge ahead.

I need to buy a RV GPS in the next three weeks and it is down to Garmin RV 660LMT or CoPilot RV.
