Alternative to Photoshop

In Gimp -

1. Choose the selection tool
2. Make your selection & adjust
3. Choose"Crop to Selection" from the Image menu

or use the crop tool, clicking inside the crop rectangle will execute the crop.

I use Photoshop primarily, but sites like Pixlr.com come in handy as a secondary resource.

Very easy to do in Pixlr.com, a kind of online version of Photoshop Lite.

are there any downsides to using an online photo program? other than the obvious need for a connection? it seems like exactly what I was looking for.

that is why I always "archive" my originals on a flash drive/dvd/etc. and work on copies. can always retrieve the original in case of mishaps. also have the originals stored in several locations in case of failure.

You will find the RAW processing in Elements considerably de-contented from Camera Raw in CS or Lightroom, but with a simpler interface. Part of what drove me to Lightroom was the absence of lens-specific corrections in Elements. But there are many other things about Elements I liked better.

To protect your original image files in Elements, turn on versioning, so any save (including save on exit from a module) creates a new file. Otherwise some functions may replace the source file without asking, while others might ask, and it takes a while to learn just what happens when.

THANK YOU so much for all of the comments. I have downloaded and installed for a 30 day trial Photoshop Elements 12...and my initial evaluation is that it is very comparable to Photoshop CS2. There are many features I really love...for example: three levels of performance: guided, intermediate and advanced. You can change the levels from image to image. From what I have seen so far, many of the tools are very similiar to Photoshop CS2...and I have virtually zero learning curve.

I'd also recommend the gimp. It doesn't work exactly like Photoshop, but it does a good job.

The main reason I use Photoshop is because I pay for the CS subscription because I use Acrobat constantly, so to me, Photoshop is a "freebie".

gimp takes a small learning curve, but its just as powerful as photoshop when it comes to touching up pictures with bad lighting and cropping of course. But you have to play with it for a few days and look at some FAQ and howto lists to help.
