I have also used Irfan View for many years. Gimp is more powerful but Irfan View is easier to use and does what I normally want to do. It is also a great photo viewer. Use it with Irfan View Thumbnails. Its Free.
It says it can handle RAW files. I have never had a RAW file so I can't verify this. Download both Irfan View and the Plugins, install Irfan View first.
