Alternative to Photoshop

The other day I posted at this forum asking about free word processors and learned of Open Office and Libre...had I not learned of Libre, Open Office would suffice. For years I have used Photoshop CS2 and now learn that there may be issues with loading it into Windows 8. I don't know that I want to spend the money on a new version of Photoshop and would like to know of any experience with an alternative. The main tools I use in Photoshop are RAW, layers, curves, sharpening and select color. All input appreciated. THANKS!
  • For digital photo manipulation there is also Light Zone- you do need to register, but it is free and Open Source.
I use Gimp for 99% of my work though... and you can use GimpShop, which has been modified to look and feel more like PS.
  • A free program, that in my opinion is easier to use than Photoshop is PhotoScape. It's free online.....check it out. :)
  • Agree with Photoshop Elements...powerful enough for 99.9% of whatever you would want to do with photos...

This is an excellent FREE alternative....HERE

edit: I slower than everyone this morning...great advice above already posted....
  • You could downgrade Photoshop perhaps. Try Photoshop Elements, which is a somewhat stripped version of the main course of CS. If I remember correctly (lots and lots of handwaving), Adobe offers a trial version, so you can see if it works with your OS and with your needs.

    :)
