Android wifi range

Is there any way I can wire the usb output of a Amped Wireless adapter model ua600ex to a wireless router and then have the router send the wifi to my Android phone?
I'm talking about using no PC/Mac and no modem and getting the Internet either straight to my phone or thru a router and then my phone.
Thanks
  • There are some wifi extenders/boosters that will find the nearest wifi signal on their own without a computer, grab the signal, lock it in and boost it. You then connect the wifi from the booster and not the source it originates from - so you would have your Android to scan for wifi, look for Amped and select that on the phone to connect to. The distance it will work depends on the extender. Not sure if the Amped Wireless adapter model ua600ex has this capability. No mater what you don't need a wifi router - which generally need a wired network connection to work from.
  • I don't believe the OPs question concerns bandwidth? Rather connection related?

I once had a wireless mobile 4G hotspot that had limited broadcast range. Not strong enough for a reliable WiFi signal on different floors. So used a second hand Linksys-N router found in a thrift store for a few dollars, and flashed with open source firmware to get repeater mode. And used the Linksys to manage all the WiFi connections. So, essentially, the router would auto login to the hotspot WiFi using a single connection. And the Linksys would handle all other WiFi connections throughout the whole house. Which also had the capability to boost the broadcast power of the router, providing at least 80% signal strength. Whereas, the hotspot could barely manage 10%-20%, unless you were within fairly close range of it.

Was also able to manage QoS using the flashed Linksys router, so was able to allocate bandwidth priority to VoIP devices. Something most all mobile hotspots cannot do.
  • I'm presently in a camp site with a very strong wifi signal. Nonetheless, by late morning, as more and more people get online, my computer just spins its wheels.

I mention this because a repeater/extender isn't going to help this situation. It's a problem of campground bandwidth, not wifi signal strength.

So, that's when I get out my mobile wifi hot spot and use my data.

BTW, I do carry a Amped repeater with me for situations where I don't have a strong CG signal. It does help in those cases, as long as it can get at least 2 bars to boost up to 5 bars. But it can't do anything with just 1 bar.
  • OK. You can do this from two different directions. You can boost connection to the CG and connect your phone to wifi, where the router is primary internet connection or, if CG is bad or non existent, you can connect your router to your 3g/4g phone hotspot, where your phone is primary internet connection.

You can set it up for $100-200, depending on what devices you pick.

  • No. You don't need to do so. Just use a second router as a WiFi repeater(wireless) to send the signal to your Android devices. Your router's firmware needs to support repeater mode?

For single broadcast routers, you'll lose half or more of the rated wireless network speed. Not internet speed. It all depends on what your internet connection speeds are?
  • Your question doesn't match your subject title
What is wrong with your Android Wi-Fi ?
A phone not picking up campground Wi-Fi signal is common
If you want to boost campground Wi-Fi
    You need a Wi-Fi repeater/router
Not a pc USB Wi-Fi adapter
  • The unit in question is a high powered USB wireless ethernet adapter. It needs to hook up to a computer.

    Not sure what you saying...

I am not familar with UA600EX but most of these units is nothing more than a external WIFI BOOSTER amplifier with a directional antenna. It has to be fed by a WIFI signal source to operate.

Then you can use it to provide your phone a strong WIFI signal farther away from the existing modem/router setup.

The UA600EX will not produce a wireless WIFI signal on its own... Think of it as a repeater...

  • I have the Amped SR10000 wireless extender. Once it's configured, I don't need anything connected to it. It just sits there and rebroadcasts wifi to anything that can receive wifi.

Does the Amped ua600ex require a wired usb connection to work even after it's configured?
