Antenna Identification

I've had this question on my mind for many years since purchasing my 97 Fleetwood Bounder. The previous owner installed some antennas on the coach and I'm not sure what they are all for. I know one is a CB antenna and I've already put it to use... but I have no idea what the others are for. I'm including some photos, any ideas? Ideally, I'd like to use one for an external wi-fi antenna for my router. I've tried using "Google" but I guess I'm not searching correctly because all I typically get are results dealing with cell towers.

  • Ah ha... I bought a line tracer off amazon a week ago to track down a coax cable, just remembered I had that so I just used it to find out which antenna is which.

The one on the top cap is hooked into the CB. The middle antenna with the curly section has a BNC connector on the end (Cell?), so that leaves the one at the very bottom, and since I can't find the cable end for that I"m going to assume that is the FM antenna.

I don't need a cell antenna, can that be modified to work as a wi-fi antenna? I'm uneducated as to what lengths work for what bands, etc... I believe most wi-fi will work off the 2.4 Ghz band?

Edit: I just tested the one closest to the bottom, it does go to the radio.
  • Well ok then ? The curly antena is a cb antenna clearly many truck stops sell them almost the same I had one on my tractor ! Cell phone antennas are smaller Wilson sells many types and none are that large . The big coils are popular with the truck driver crowd
  • The one mounted on the top of the front cap is an ordinary AM/FM dash radio antenna. I had the same antenna on my previous coach.

don't think so but I 'spose anything is possible. CB antennas come in all shapes and sizes. I'm a ham and have been around this stuff for close to 50-years and my best guess is that it's a cellular antenna. not sure for which band, though. how old is the coach?

  • the antenna in the lower photo with the curly section is almost certainly a cell phone antenna.

the antenna on the left in the upper photo may be a wifi antenna. can you show a photo of the connector on the end of the cable for that antenna?
