Antenna Suggestions

Just purchased a 1989 Coachman Van Conversion without an external TV antenna. I'm looking to bolt an omni directional antenna to the roof rack railings.

One suggestion has been a LAVA Omnipro HD8000.

Not sure how these will hold up to the highway speed winds. Does anyone have experience with such a setup?

Really don't want to put more holes in the fiberglass roof.

  • I've read thousands of posts on these forums, and I don't think anyone (except the poster above) had any thing positive to say about Omni Directional antennas.

In spite of all the hoopla and hollar, the old style bat wing antenna is still the best.

Another option is to get one of those "As Seen On TV" flat antennas that attach to the back of your television. They can be purchased anywhere, and most do a pretty good job. You just have to position in front of a window. We had several in our house. When we canceled Satellite TV, I finally used the existing wiring and installed an outside antenna. Um... it's an antenna that over 50 years old! My dad was a Television Repair man. He also installed antennas. It was one my mother still had in her garage attic he never sold. It was never used and never exposed to the elements.... still over 50 years old. I put it on a pole (Mast) at the house, and I pull in all kinds of stations. The bat wing on my TT does too, sitting right beside the house.

So really ... the simpler the antenna, the better off you'll be! Really!
  • SCVJeff, Thanks for the info. Now I need to find one that I can use without adding holes.

My quest is two fold. is the Omni any good and if not what is?

As another option what about the Wingard RS3000
  • You probably just found the only other person on this forum to recommend an Omni antenna. Unless you are urban camping almost literally in view of the broadcast tower, an Omni is by far the worst antenna choice I you can possibly make. I'm sure I'm only the first to reply on how bad they really are.
  • We had an omnidirectional antenna on our camper when we bought it and it was worthless. Good luck on yours.
  • I have one and was really surprised by how well it picked up channels, and at a fair distance.

I'd be concerned about traveling in motion with it, though.
