My trick is to buy the Apple battery case. I bought one for my 6s last year, and it allowed the phone to last through 18-20 hour teleconferences. iOS 11.0.1 (update came out a few hours ago) isn't bad, although there isn't really much to write home about.
If I buy a new iPhone this year, it will be an 8. The main reason is that the size and form factor work well. The iPhone 10 doesn't appeal to me, especially without a home button and a more awkward way to do Apple Pay confirmations.
There is a balance. When a family member had issues with their phone, and I gave them my 6s, I bought a cheap Android phone, was so unhappy with it, that I bought an iPhone 7. Since I use the phone constantly, paying a premium is understandable. However, there is a difference between buying a useful device and wasting money on stuff that isn't needed.
