Back in 2005 they switched from the PowerPC to Intel based processors. They had to switch since Motorola was discontinuing the processor. They supported the old OS for awhile. My company was in the same boat. We also used PowerPc processors on some of our products and we had to do a lifetime buy in order to continue shipments on some of our legacy products. For the MAC, you couldn't use newer software on your older MAC but I would HARDLY call that rendering it useless. in fact, I believe you could use newer programs in an emulation mode but it was slow if you absolutely had top. The fact that the new machines could now run Windows and run Windows programs was such a huge advantage, the switch was totally worth it.
Out of curiosity, how long ago did you spend $4K on a Dell Laptop?
