Backup camera on top-rear of 5th-wheel - any help?

I've been thinking of having a camera mounted at rear of my 5th-wheel trailer. I would view the output on my 7" Garmin RV760 GPS. My wife no longer can help with directing me into a campsite so I figure I can use all the help I can get.
I figure the camera would be of use when driving down the road and you want to know about any vehicles traveling next to your trailer. But what about backing into a campsite? Is the camera of much value in that situation?
Thanks,
Glenn

  • Best resource I have found is at www.tadibrothers.com. They sell in addition to monitors and cameras and complete kits, video signal amplifiers ($50, $100, $150 depending on amplification) that work with any camera and monitor.

For the Garmin 760 there is the Garmin BC-20 camera that is compatible and will hook up to the Garmin with a special video receiver that clips onto the back of the 760. Distance is limited to 45 feet without boosters but it results in one 7" display working for both GPS and for monitoring the video camera. I did not want two 7" monitors on the dash while driving.

I wired the Garmin into my running lights so I don't have to be backing up to have use of the camera. It works well and a single touch of the GPS screen switches it to the video display or back to the GPS display.

Where do you all have your cameras mounted? Top center, low center, mid center, off to one side? I'm thinking about doing this, and am not sure what the best location would be.

    Top center.
  • I rode with a friend in his Infiniti. He has the "Around View" camera system which combines front, rear, and side camera images into a single composite view of everything around you and is especially good for backing/parallel parking. I assume it would take more cameras to put it together for an RV, but it sure seems like it would be useful.

  • I have one on the back of my 5th wheel. It helps , but a live person is better.
At least you can see if you are about to run over or into something.
  • We mounted a camera on our fifth wheel and find it useful going down the road and seeing what's immediately behind when backing, but I still help DH out because the camera can't see all the way around or up. If DW can't help you, use it but back up slowly, get out, survey, back up more, get out and survey, and repeat the process till you're safely where you want to be.
