Matt, in all honesty I've not found BaseCamp to be hard to use. I use it by putting in way points along the route I'm planning, you generally don't need a lot but it depends on number of turns and sidetrips. I Select the waypoints I'm going to use and then right click and choose "Create Route...". You can fine tune a route by adding or changing the order of waypoints.
I used BaseCamp to do a circle route from Platte City, MO to Platte City, MO by way of the Washington/Oregon/California coast. It's kind of fun to work with, and I'm probably not using all the features, but it works very well.
I'm a motorcycling touring guy and I started in 1971. I used paper maps and a tankbag so I could look at the maps easily. Now I use a GPS on the bike and am grateful for it every minute. LOL
I will share a dirty little secret: there are paper atlases of all the states in a cupboard of the trailer. I've yet to need them, but they are there...just in case. :)
