Be careful on Java update

Yesterday I updated my Java and got some junk I didn't ask for. One was a driver updater and the other was an advertising malware.

These two buggers kept socking me with advertisements and actually prevented me from accessing me email account. I got rid of them with the windows program remover.

I also find my browsers were packed with extra toolbars and in addition a shortcut was on my desktop for an internet game.

In recent years bundling******ware with software updates has become more and more popular... I watch the update and when it says "Downloading ____" (not the program being updated) I will kill the update then go back and see where I missed a check box.

For example, A recent Adobe reader update wanted to download McAffee.. I am very very much against McAffee (and not for the reasons you might think) I have two reasons one being that it takes too much CPU Time. The other I will not tell you for legal reasons (I do not wish to be sued).

But this bundling is becoming more and more popular.

I think they need to outlaw it. Or at least require that the DEFAULT option on the approval page is "Decline" (Add******Ware { } instead of Add******ware {X}.

I have actually deleted some not-all that useful (But still useful) stuff and/or chosen alternative software because of this on a few occasions.
  • Uninstall JAVA, whether you have Windows or MAC. Just get rid of JAVA. JAVA is a malware magnet and one of the biggest targets of Malware writers.

We removed JAVA from nearly all of our PCs where I work (over 1100), and I removed it from all of my home machines over a year ago. Have yet to see a need for it at home or work.
  • I read a good article in USA Today a few years ago explaining that you probably no longer need Java at all. I ditched it with no change in my usual computing whatsoever. So try deleting the entire program.

I think they must make their money now by collecting fees for sneaking garbage onto unsuspecting computers.
  • Yes I am aware of those little insidious check boxes and I'm generally quite careful about them. Don't know how I missed any this time around.
  • A lot of times, boxws for extra "features" are already checked. You have to be careful.
