I have a (cheap) Oregon Scientific WMR200 wireless that I use to monitor weather in the backyard and temps in my RV barn, RV (when it's in the barn), as well as temps in the attic and greenhouse. The base unit has a crappy 6" antenna that couldn't receive very much that was outside the house. My solution was to find the frequency it runs on and build a small dipole antenna for it that is mounted on the outside of the house. I ran a an RP-SMA extension cable from the antenna to the base unit which I modified to accept the SMA connection. I now have a solid connection to all my remote sensors. The base unit has an option for uploading data via USB to a computer and Oregon Scientific provides PC software. Since I use Mac and UNIX systems I reverse engineered the protocol and wrote my own UNIX based SW that captures and records the data. Overall I'm pretty happy with the setup, although there are a number of things I'd like to do with the SW and the data that's on my long-term ToDo list.
