Looking at ebay, there's a lot of different brands and types. I have no idea what features, types or brands to be looking for. Is a meter that also shows the satellites more expensive?
We're using a Canadian sat. and the signal fizzles out somewhere south of WA state. Near the border, I can plop the tripod on the ground and get a signal almost immediately. Farther south, I've spent up to an hour trying to get a signal in vain. Sometimes there def. should be a decent signal but only pick up sats on either side of it. The farther south we go, the more important it is to get an accurate alignment for our setup and something better than the Winegard meter would help.
We were just in Long Beach WA and got a very good signal. Over the bridge to the OR coast a mere few miles away, haven't been able get a signal at all. It's situations like that when a better meter sure would help.
