BlueTooth Brake Controller

I have just learned that bluetooth brake controllers exist. I spoke to the owner of a used Lance 1575 I am interested in and will look at it in a couple days. It has a Curt bluetooth brake controller. I did a quick web search of how it works. Does anyone have a bluetooth brake controller and how well does it work? I am skeptical of its use and connection thru a smart phone. Especially since I drive mountainous areas. And how do you prevent theft when using it? I would appreciate any enlightenment on these controllers.
Thanks
  • We had this Prodigy one on our last TT. The control unit mounted on the TT frame and plugged into our truck. The TT cable plugged into it. Really handy when pulling with multiple trucks ...and my knees weren’t constantly hitting it.

You did not actually “need” anything in the truck for it to work. But it came with a remote control that plugged into the cigarette letter for a display, setup, and a manual control. I hung mine from the air vent right by the shift lever where you could see it and access the manual switch easily. It did pair with the unit on the TT but I’m not sure if it was Bluetooth or not.

It was the best, easiest to use brake controller that I ever used.

Cell phone, like you would use to change settings.
  • I use Apple’s AirPods. Love them but I have enough BT issues....no way for TT brakes.

That was my concern, but it will continue to work at its last setting even if BT connection is lost.

However, I do agree that the overall length could be an issue, and I wonder how well it would work if your plug was at an angle to your forward motion.

  • It looks like an accelerometer based brake controller, which you can modify the settings via bluetooth. Pretty cool looking, it looks like it's plug and play and would function with no connection (after initial setup I assume), or you can use your phone to override it and/or change settings.

It is so long though, I'd worry about busting off the 7 pin plug on the truck when someone bumps into it.
  • Surely it can't be completely Bluetooth connected. That would be a really bad idea. It looks pretty interesting, and would be handy if you have more than one trailer.
