Browser Problems on iPhone and iPad

Latetly it seems like my iPhone and iPad browsers are possessed.

Pop ups open with BS "You've just won a .......", " answer a few questions and we'll send you gift card", "you've been selected for a .......". You can't close the pop up, so I end up having to kill the browser.

I'm also seeing the App Store open up without me wanting it to, and ending up on various game or app download pages. I close the App Store and it opens again.

It happens with both Safari and Firefox.

I've done the "Clear history and website data" numerous times. Reset all settings under "General/Reset" numerous times. It will stop for a while then start again.

This is so frustrating and I'm afraid I have very little patience for it. I thought this garbage wasn't supposed to happen with Apple products. This may not technically be a virus, or malware, but it sure as heck is just as disruptive and interferes with my enjoyment of the products.

How do I stop this?

  • Well, the phone seems to be behaving itself now. I appreciate all the help.

I dumped Firefox from both the phone and the iPad, and since installing Betafish AdBlock on the phone I haven't seen any more of that nonsense on it. Up until a few days ago, I had never seen that problem on the iPad, and I was using Firefox at the time. I swear there was a correlation with the iPhone using cellular data vs wifi data when I'm at home. Not sure why, but it was definitely happening primarily when I was away from my wireless network at home and browsing a news website.

Regarding the various browsers, I've tried many of them and they all seem to have their good and bad points. A few I disliked instantly, but most are ok once you get used to their interface. I think I'll just stick with the one I'm familiar with for now. They all seem to change over time in ways I don't like, so until that happens as long as I can make Safari work for me I'll use it.

  • I get one of those on my iPad in safari once in a while. It's giving away a free iPad and always on the Harley Davidson forum.

    Try Chrome. Never get those.

Chrome isn't immune. I've had them before and was able to clear them but today I had one that I could not clear. I had to delete Chrome and reinstall it.

I guess I should figure out how to get apps to install on both devices when installed on either one so this doesn't happen again.

    Thanks for the help.

When you use App Store go to the bottom and next to the update icon there is a "purchased" icon.
Click on it and it will list all the apps you have, if it's installed on the other ipad/iphone it will let you download it on the one that doesn't have it.
  • I use an app called Purify on my iPhone, and addons called NoScript and AdBlock Plus on my Firefox browser. I don't see adds on RV.net, nor am I annoyed by pop-ups. I do have to allow pages I trust to run scripts though.
  • Thanks Fizz, you made my little noggin light turn on.

Until yesterday, I had been fighting this problem on just my iPhone. It also seemed to happen mostly when the phone is using cellular data vs. wifi, so I had been consoling myself with "Well, at least it's not happening on the iPad". Then yesterday while browsing with Firefox on the iPad, one of those dang pop ups saying I won something opened up. GDI!!! :M I almost threw it out the window.

Your post reminded me that I had installed Betafish AdBlock on the iPad when I first got it. I also THOUGHT I had installed it on the iPhone, but when I checked I discovered that I hadn't. AdBlock doesn't support Firefox, and I use Safari most of the time, so that's why I hadn't seen that problem on the iPad but was seeing it all the time on the iPhone regardless of which browser I was using. AdBlock actually does a pretty good job of blocking that stuff.

Anyway, I just installed AdBlock on the iPhone and it seems to be working better now. I guess I should figure out how to get apps to install on both devices when installed on either one so this doesn't happen again.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Do a search at the App Store for Ad Blockers.
    Some are free, most aren't
They work most of the time.
  • You are not alone. I get them from time to time. I do as you just close the browser and keep going. Usually goes away for a while.
