Buying A Used DTV Receiver

I get tired of moving the sat receiver model D12-100 between the RV and the house.
If I buy a used same mod DTV receiver off ebay, will DTV authorize it ?
Does it need a card w/ it ?

Thanks for any info.

  • The big difference between leasing a receiver from DTV and buying it from them is the contract. When you lease the receiver from them, you pay a small amount upfront for the receiver, are under a contract for 2 years and if you stop the service at any time (even after the two years), you have to return the receiver.

If you buy a receiver from Direct TV, you pay a BIG price upfront for the equipment, but you can stop service anytime with no contractual agreements.

Having said this, we all know that different DTV representatives seem to give out different information. This is what I was told 2 years ago from the rep I spoke to.

Let us know what you find out!
  • I just bought my DTV Receiver and leave it in the Trailer 24/7. I own it. They don't care where you put it, but you have to pay $6.00/mo for having it. I bought mine from SolidSignals. Personally, I'd only buy from SolidSignals or a similar online retailer and not from eBay!

If you order one from DirecTV, good luck. You'll be in the "leased equipment" boat and that's not what you're after.
  • Ok, but wait just a minute,. if I don't own it, and have to pay $6/mo,
why wouldn't I just order one from DTV. That's what I cancelled about 5 yrs ago to save the $72 per year, and they had me return the receiver.
My idea was to own the RV receiver, and just transfer my service between the 2 receivers when needed.
    Its not that easy ??

    1) You need to pay about $6.00/mo for the extra receiver
    2) Yes, you'll need a card

If it stops working, once in a while you need to "reauthorize" the box (if you go for long periods without using it)

Yes but just remember you don't own it even if you buy it off ebay. You are just leasing it as far as DTV is concerned

I don't understand this statement. I have two receivers, one leased, one purchased from Amazon. On my bill, one shows as leased, and one shows as owned. If my owned one breaks, they won't replace it. If my leased one breaks, they will replace it. I pay a monthly fee for one HD box; the other box is included in the base rate. If I add a receiver, I will pay an additional monthly fee for access. If I remove a receiver, I will pay no fee for access other than my base rate.

Good point on needing to be re-authorized from time to time.

This happens to me almost everytime I just unplug my older DirecTV extra SAT RCVRS.

I taped the ACCOUNT INFO on each SAT RCVR that I was moving back an forth from the house to the RV TRAILER so that I would have all the info I would need to pass along to DIRECTV to get it authorized again.

I was calling the DIRECTV 800 number at first and then discovered you could do this ON-LINE by logging into your account.

Having all the account info on-hand including where the SAT RCVR was being used in your house all the time was a blessing when you need it.
