I have two tablets and we have a netbook and a laptop. The netbook and laptop, of course, do everything that our home desktop does. The tablets can do about 85% of what a computer can do - and that drops down to maybe 50% if you use specific software on your PC and want to use that on the road. The tablet has apps that mimic what the computer does but most do that in an abbreviated way. One thing that the tablets have over the laptop and the netbook is that they boot very quickly and you can be on and online (with wifi or cell data service if you have a 3G or 4G tablet) much faster than with a Windows PC. If you go with an Android tablet, many are USB capable and can connect to a usb keyboard or a usb hard drive or flash drive. Ipad cannot. The Android tablets are also capable of installing an extended memory SD card up to 64 gb - which an Ipad cannot - but that extended memory is only for data, music, video files, ebooks, and the like. You cannot install apps to the extended memory card on Android. Whether Ipad or Android you can use a bluetooth keyboard or other bluetooth connections which are recognized quickly and (on my two Android tablets) work well.
I take a tablet with us when traveling and my wife takes her Windows netbook. If I have to make changes to my blogsite I go for my wife's netbook as it is much easier to do this. If I need to copy a url and paste it somewhere I also use the netbook as the tablet can do this but not very easily. When I am using the tablet I often wonder why I just didn't get myself a netbook instead - but the tablet is a novelty and I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 with handwriting recognition and that was an appealing novelty also. But still the netbook is easier to use and has and can have anything we use at home.
