Just a thought, if you have software / hardware that will only run on XP like I did, then think about a Puppy Linux.
You can get many different Pups that will run from a USB drive, without touching anything on the computer. You can have your XP just as it is, and when you need to get out on the net, just pop in the usb drive and boot up into puppy and enjoy. (you might be surprised at how well your old computer runs).
I have been able to keep using a video capture card, and playing my old games on XP and basically have the best of both worlds.
And if you do run across some problems on the net, it will be on a USB drive, not on your HD. I've been using Puppies for about 10 years, never had a problem.
