Can't enter Safe Mode
well,on top of my other woes on this older Toshiba laptop for some reason I can't get it into safe mode. I know in the past, before I reinstalled Windows XP I could get into safe mode OK by repeatedly...

Windows XP you can start it and while it's in the "Booting Windows" phase sit on the power button to kill it.. Next boot it should present the menu.
If you can get it to boot fully into anything you may be able to set safe mode in the MSCONFIG uitilty
On Windows 8.1 that is what I had to do with one of my machines that had an issue... (I forget the issue but I fixed it).
Some of the thigns Doze (just recalled the issue) does to protect us are major pains, thankfully I remember a few tricks that still work from days gone past.
