well,on top of my other woes on this older Toshiba laptop for some reason I can't get it into safe mode. I know in the past, before I reinstalled Windows XP I could get into safe mode OK by repeatedly pressing the F 8 key while booting up.now, for some reason this method doesn't work eventually it will boot up to the sign In screen, which I don't want since I'm trying to eliminate the need for a password. Thanks for any insight you can give me.

As soon as the BIOS has finished processing, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. NOTE If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this problem, restart the computer and try again. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll through the menu options, and then select the Safe Mode menu option. Press ENTER.If you see the WINDOWs LOGO you have waited to long to start pressing the F8 key.Roy Ken

Some computers want F2 or F10. Give those a shot. I have seen them use the Del key as well.If you have the original disks it may boot from those.

I'm pressed for time as I've got to get to work, so doing this off the top of my head. But, in WIN XP, hold down Windows Key+R and in RUN, type msconfig and hit the ENTER key. Click on Boot.ini tab and in options, check-mark /safemode and click the OK button. Reboot, and it should go into Safe Mode.You may have to go back into msconfig while in Safe Mode, and un-check /safemode option to boot back to WIN XP.

Note that just having the computer do a "RESTART" isn't good enough. It has to be shut all the way off, then turned back on with the ON button.
