I haven't seen any hams make it clear how far you can communicate, given the level of gear you carry.
The inexpensive Chinese UHF/VHF 5W handhelds will go only about 2-3 miles line of sight (about the same distance as a 5W CB), unless you are in the line of sight of a repeater. Then, you're using the power of the repeater to reach a wider area.
5W CB's have the (possible) advantage of skip, to OCCASIONALLY get a longer distance. If you're near a roadway, especially a limited-access highway, then you'll probably get some trucker. If you're in the woods, good luck my friend.
If you're carrying portable HF gear to go longer distances, your major issues are to put up a good antenna and good sources of power (solar panels charging heavy batteries). Not overly difficult, but it takes planning.
For emergencies in the Backwoods, I wouldn't rely on either one -- and I've been a ham for over 50 years and a CB'er for over 40. Go with the sat phone, and back it up with a beacon. Then, I'll be dispatched to pick you up.
