I would question why the OP feels that he absolutely needs some sort of communications to begin with.
I have read several stories where people had communications, It may have been nothing more than a 2 Meter hand held, or it may have been a Sat phone, or it may have been a decent High Frequency rig. but they had communications and they lived to tell the story.....
I've also read the stories of folks who had no communications.
Alas.. The story was told by investigators, for the people involved,, Well they are not able to tell the story themselves, at least not in THIS life.
So yes, Communications can easily be a matter of life or.... That other option.. and as a professional in that specific area of communications (9-1-1 was indeed my office phone) I do not like "that other option" one bit.. That is the enemy.
Yes, i understand what you are saying. What i was thinking of was some of the places that i've been into. Even if you had cell coverage and phoned 911, the chances of anyone reaching you in time were virtually nonexistent! I think we all have a different idea of what constitutes 'remote' I'm thinking of places in and around BC where, after you have driven as far as the road goes, you then have a multi day hike to get to where you want. Even it somehow the search and rescue gets involved right at the beginning, it wold still be too late (of course it all depends on what the critical situation is).
